Interventional Musculoskeletal Medicine

Interventional musculoskeletal medicine focuses on identifying the pain generator or root cause of a problem. Often imaging studies do not demonstrate the entire picture of an injury or pain complaint. Modern 3 Tesla MRI machines only have a resolution of 1mm and ultrasound machines have a better resolution of 200 microns. These are quite impressive numbers, but they still can miss a great deal of pathology including small nerve injuries and tears of tissues such as rotator cuffs and intervertebral discs. Some patients become tearful when they have a severe pain complaint, and have seen many healthcare providers and multiple imaging findings are reported as normal. Diagnostic and therapeutic treatments include epidural steroid injections, joint injections, and joint viscosupplementation.
